Ravens at Chiefs Is Season Opener on September 5

The 2024 regular season schedule will be announced tomorrow night (May 15) on NFL Network at 8 p.m. and, as usual, the schedule has its share of interesting innovations and highlights.

For example:

  • The schedule includes five international games which will be announced and discussed in advance tomorrow morning on a special NFL Network show (7AM ET).
  • The five international games include the league’s first-ever game in South America on Friday, September 6 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Eagles will host the Packers that night. It also will mark the first time in more than 50 years that the league will play a game on the Friday night of Opening Weekend.
  • The other four international games include one in Munich (with the Panthers as ’home’ team) and three in London (with the Vikings, Bears, and Jaguars as ‘home’ teams). A recent study showed that the two back-to-back games played in Frankfurt, Germany last season generated an economic impact of nearly $120 million for that city. International games continue to be a promotional bonus for the league and an economic bonanza for the host cities.
  • The regular season opener will feature the Super Bowl LVIII Champion Chiefs at home against the Ravens on Thursday night, September 5. It is a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game. Ravens’ John Harbaugh is the longest serving head coach in franchise history (since 2008). The familiar head coach on the Chiefs’ sideline will be 66-year old Andy Reid, who this offseason signed a new contract that will keep him on the field through the 2028 season.
  • There will be three games played on Thanksgiving Day. In addition, the league will play at least one game on Christmas. Games on these two holidays have become the norm but playing games on a Wednesday (December 25) is unique for the league.

The full schedule will be posted tomorrow night and thousands of fans will begin planning their road game travel and accommodations to follow their favorite teams. The clock continues to move and there are fewer than four months until regular season action begins. We at NFL Alumni cannot wait!
