Anxious Alumni Dads Hoping Sons Are Drafted

The nationally-televised 2024 NFL Draft will be held in Detroit for the first time starting this Thursday evening, April 25 at 8 P.M. (ET)

After years of frustration and losing on the field, Detroit and the hometown Lions have become a media and sports fan favorite. The Lions under NFL alum and head coach Dan Campbell reached the NFC Championship Game last January 28 for the first time since the 1991 season.

Thirteen (13) draft-eligible players have accepted Commissioner Goodell’s invitation to hear their names called in person in Detroit. The list includes top quarterback prospects Caleb Williams (USC), Jayden Daniels (LSU), and Drake Maye (UNC).

“Detroit’s come such a long way in 10-12 years,” says local resident and NFL sponsor Dan Gilbert. “It’s a perfect time for us to host the Draft. There is still an overhanging from decades of challenges and so one of our biggest missions is  to get Detroit’s reputation back where it should be.”

The estimated crowd of 400,000 attendees who are expected to take in the Draft and its festivities include Green Bay city officials and Packers staff members. The 2025 Draft is scheduled for April next year in Green Bay.

There are at least 13 draft prospects whose fathers played in the league. Those NFL alumni include:

  • Frank Gore (who played in the league from 2005-2020)
  • Marvin Harrison (1996-2008)
  • Ed McCaffrey (1991-2003)
  • Arthur Whittington (1978-1985)
  • John Alt (1984-1996)
  • Luther Elliss (1995-2004)
  • James Harrell (1979-1987)
  • Kris Jenkins (2001-2010)
  • Jeremiah Trotter (1998-2009)
  • Jerome Foster (1983-1987)
  • Donnie Abraham (1996-2004)
  • Ron Stone (1993-2005)

The first round of the 2024 Draft kicks off on NFL Network and several other national networks at 8 P.M. Thursday but the pre-Draft buzz began about…24 hours after LAST year’s Draft ended. Let’s enjoy one of the NFL’s biggest events!
