Mel Holmes was a Miami native who played his college ball at North Carolina A&T. He was drafted on the fifth round in 1971 by the Steelers and played three seasons in Pittsburgh, mostly as a backup offensive lineman. He died at age 65 in 2015. Ernie (Fats) Holmes was a defensive tackle on two of the Steelers Super Bowl teams. He finished his career in 1978 with the Patriots. He died at age 59 in 2008 in Beaumont, Texas. L. C. Greenwood was a four-time Super Bowl champion defensive end for the Steelers. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and was named to the NFL’s 1970s All-Decade Team. Tragically, he died at age 67 in 2013.
