Unique Father-Son Duo Together Again as NFL Alumni
Zak DeOssie in Giants uniform with father Steve
Steve and Zak DeOssie are the only NFL father-son duo to win a Super Bowl with the same franchise.
Son Zak formally announced his retirement last month after a 12-year NFL career with the Giants. He made it clear in his retirement statement thathis dad played a major role in his success both on and off the field.
“You have been the best mentor, advocate and friend through all these years,” Zak wrote addressing his dad. “Three (Super Bowl) rings for the DeOssie’s (so far) , but we have so much more than that to celebrate together in the past and going forward. Thank you for all you have done.”
Steve, 57, was a Cowboys draft pick in 1984 and played five seasons at linebacker in Dallas before being traded to the Giants in ’89. He helped his new team win Super Bowl XXV in 1990. He later played briefly with the Jets and finished his career with two seasons in New England.
Zak’s NFL travels were only for road games. He joined the Giants in 2007 and spent his entire career in the Meadowlands. He was a fourth-round draft choice (just like his dad). The Brown University grad helped the Giants win two Super Bowls (over his hometown Patriots) and was twice a Pro Bowl selection.
Zak already has transitioned into his post-NFL career. He had worked as a summer associate for two years at Goldman Sachs headquarters and now has joined the financial firm’s main office in New York where he IS a Vice President in the Private Wealth Management division.
“Head down, hands steady produce results,” says the 36- year-old former center. “I learned from my time with the Giants that hard work pays off. As I walk away from the game as a player, I thankfully get to keep that mentality.”
We at NFL Alumni welcome Zak into our ranks and wish the entire DeOssie family only the best in the years ahead.
