NFL Alumni Dhani Jones Helping To Ease COVID-19 Stress In Community
It is not as if NFL (and University of Michigan) alum Dhani Jones needed something to do.
The 11-year (2000-2010) linebacker has branched out in several successful busines directions since his playing days ended. He is a current board member of Pocket Outdoor Media, an advisor to PETRAM data and also serves as chairman of the investment fund Qey Capital Partners.
Jones, 42, also for many years has had a philanthropic side to his career. For example, he partnered earlier this year with the Stand Together non-profit to raise money through its #GiveTogetherNow relief effort for families experiencing financial hardships. The campaign so far has raised more than $100 million to provide 200,000 families with one-time payments of $500.
Those of you who in recent months received a grant from our NFL Alumni COVID-19 fund or the NFL Player Care Foundation know the short-term financial and emotional benefits even a small grant can mean to you and your family.
“I had an opportunity to visit Stand Together earlier this year before COVID-19 hit, “ says Jones. “Right away, I saw the power of their community and started asking how I could get a little more involved. Later, I received a phone call from one of their organizers who started the conversation ‘We were thinking about…’. That was all I needed. I was in from the start.”
He began to help by hosting a weekly “Stand Together Live” series on Instagram and interviewed business leaders, philanthropists and NFL alumni. The conversations centered around overcoming professional and personal obstacles, the benefits of helping others, and exploring how the nonprofit community has improved their lives and careers.
“There is a certain level of vulnerability and openness that you have when you’re asking for help,” explains Jones. “The response from our Instagram followers has been tremendous. Everyone who gives realizes that it’s one community helping another.”
