The first month of the NFL hiring season has been hectic one for new head coaches who also are NFL alumni. Three former NFL players were hired as head coaches so far in January and the 49ers still have a vacancy to fill. The Broncos signed rookie head coach Vance Joseph last week, who was a defensive back for the Jets and Colts in 1995-96. Anthony Lynn, the new head coach for the “new” Los Angeles Chargers, also is filling that role full time for the first time after serving as the Bills interim head coach for the 2016 season finale. Lynn was a running back for the Broncos and 49ers from 1993-99. Finally, Doug Marrone, who was at the Bills helm in 2013-14, gets a second opportunity in that position starting this season with the Jaguars. Marrone was an offensive lineman for the Dolphins and Saints in 1987 and 1989. We at NFL Alumni are proud of these three men as well as all 175 former NFL players who currently are on the league’s 32 coaching staffs.
